Severe weather warning issued for Douglas Shire

The Douglas Shire is bracing for heavy rain and thunderstorms.

UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning is still current for the the Douglas Shire.

The region is being told to brace for heavy rain by the Bureau of Meteorology, with severe thunderstorms likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding 'over the next several hours' in areas including Port Douglas, Mossman, Cairns and Atherton.

EARLIER: The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning at 2pm today, saying Severe thunderstorms ere likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in Port Douglas, Mossman, Mareeba, Cairns, Palm Island, Ingham, Cardwell and Atherton.

They have already reported 64mm of of rain in a half hour period west of Innisfail.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

  * Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
  * Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
  * Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  * Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
