CONSTRUCTION of a new fishing platform at the old Mowbray Bridge could be completed by the end of June.

The Douglas Shire Council has finished investigations into the replacement structure and was now calling on community input into its preliminary design.

Council ripped the old bridge down in February last year due to ongoing safety concerns, a decision that drew the ire of local residents and tourists who frequently used it as a fishing and crocodile-spotting site.

Mayor Julia Leu said residents had until February 28 to provide comment on the structure and had an opportunity to chat with Council officers at the site on Tuesday 14 February.

“In some instances, it’s much easier to point things out (in person) rather than try to explain something on paper,” Leu said.

“Council is looking at using a 100 per cent recycled plastic for the decking and safety rails in preference to timber.

“It is resistant to termites and moisture, and will never split, rot, crack or need painting which means it will have a long life, and minimise maintenance costs to ratepayers.”

The project is expected to cost around $100,000 and is slated to commence in April/May.

The preliminary design includes safety railings, bollards to prevent vehicle access and a landscaped access pathway to the platform.
