THE regions best green thumbs will get the chance to showcase their talents with the launch of the Douglas Garden Awards next month.

The inaugural awards, to be run by the Douglas Shire Council, will include a host of categories including gardens for regular homes and large properties, edible gardens and sustainable initiatives.

Mayor Julia Leu said the garden awards was an opportunity for the community to present their gardens and gain recognition for their passion and dedication.

"We have so many passionate and creative green thumbs here in Douglas, so it is hoped that the awards encourage an even greater feeling of pride in our towns and further improve the beauty and attractiveness of our area, for locals and those considering moving here permanently”,’ she said.

There will also be a professional gardener category for resorts, businesses and homes and a category for school or childcare centres.

Entries are set to open on July , so start preparing them now. Judging for the awards will take place in mid-September.
