ONE of Australia’s most successful businessmen, Chris Morris, believes a lagoon pool would be a valuable addition to Port Douglas.

The $6 billion Computershare founder says an Airlie Beach style lagoon ‘near the water’ would complement the town and be a huge draw for families.

“If there is somewhere to put it then I think it’s a brilliant idea,” he said while in Port Douglas this week.

“I’d be interested in hearing why people wouldn’t want it? It’s aesthetically beautiful, you'd like to see it near the water.”

The lagoon has proved a divisive subject in the region. Those in favour want a safer year-round swimming alternative to the ocean, while those opposed are concerned over its cost – projected to be at least $15 million - and the possibility of a rate rise to help finance its estimated $1.5 million a year maintenance bill. Some also believe it would become too popular with backpackers.

“I like backpackers,” Morris said.

“They bring something to this town and half these joints (in Port Douglas) wouldn’t work without them.

“The way they did it in Airlie Beach is brilliant. It’s not a huge construction but it actually adds something (to the town).

“I was happy to hear about the marina (development) and that’s great, but that’s for the high end of town a bit, and you need both.”

Morris, who has invested almost $300 million in the Far North, was in Port Douglas speaking at a business forum on Tuesday.

The Morris Group currently own the Port Douglas based MY Flying Fish, Nautilus Aviation, Daintree Village Hotel, Daintree Eco Lodge, Orpheus Island, Mount Mulligan Station and The Ville Casino in Townsville.
