TEENAGE angler Craig Headland has caught a spanish mackerel weighing almost as much as himself.

The 18-year-old is visiting Port Douglas from Scotland alongside his father, Graham, to celebrate his milestone birthday.

His older brother Luke, who is the manager at The Little Larder cafe in Port Douglas, took him on a Norseman fishing charter last week where he reeled in the 34kg fish. Not bad considering Craig weighs around 49kg.

“He’s only ever fished once before and that was two years ago on the pontoons up the estuary,” Luke said.

“This is the only mackerel he has ever caught. I’ve told him to retire from fishing.”
