A POLICE search for a man in Wonga Beach was called off last night and won't continue today.
Police units and a heavily armed special response team swooped on Wonga Beach yesterday after a man allegedly crashed a stolen vehicle into a fence. He fled the scene on foot amid reports he was carrying a weapon.
The Toyota Landcruiser was allegedly stolen from Townsville earlier this week. Police said the man, in his 20s, was wearing black shorts and shirt.
It's believed he is wanted in relation to a number of other criminal matters.
The Wonga Beach State School was locked down as a precautionary yesterday as police conducted their operation, which included spot checks of travelling vehicles.
Residents of the small community are being told to return to business as usual today.
