DOUGLAS Shire Council has approved a massive renovation for the Central Hotel in Port Douglas.
The Hilrok Hotel Group Pty Ltd, the Sydney-based owners of the local favourite, had a development application ticked off yesterday at a council meeting in Mossman.

A council report said the pub’s structural integrity of the building was a key driver for the renovations.
The overhaul is expected to provide greater ease of access for patrons from the front-to-rear of the classic 'Queenslander'.
“The beer garden is to be redesigned to significantly improve the ‘look and feel’ of the premises,” the report stated.
The northern end of the existing verandah will be extended to allow 'the north western elevation of the building to be ‘finished’ and linked with other designs elements'.
A refurbished beer garden will also include terraced areas and the existing shade sails will be replaced with a roof structure.
The 'Central' is the oldest pub in Port Douglas originally built in 1878 as the North Australian Hotel.
