DOUGLAS Shire’s proposed Planning Scheme will be a key focus at Wednesday’s Council meeting and councillors will have the opportunity to consider a report that recommends Council proceed with the scheme incorporating amendments contained within the Submission Review Report.

And it will be further requested that the Minister for Infrastructure and Planning approve the proposed Douglas Shire Planning Scheme.

Following community consultation, 615 submissions were received of which 573 were properly-made submissions. This means the statutory requirements – the submissions were signed, dated and met the deadline – were adhered to.

The planning scheme was available for public review and consultation from August 17 to September 30, 2016.

The driving principles of the Proposed Planning Scheme are designed to conserve the Shire’s natural environment and outstanding biodiversity values; utilise the region’s natural resources efficiently; ensure the region’s atmosphere remains clear and clean; and supports the development of a diverse thriving economy.

Should councillors give the go-ahead, the now extremely popular Choo Choos @St Crispins will be granted a liquor licence. The cafe – the brainchild of Port Douglas’ John Morris – is located at the Bally Hooley’s final stop and was opened in November last year. It is open from 6:30am until 2:30pm serving breakfast, lunch and light refreshments.
