Swimfit Four Mile Beach Ocean Swim here to stay

OCEAN SWIM

Last updated:

A 50 per cent growth in competitors from last year’s inaugural event shows Swimfit is here stay on the yearly Port Douglas event calendar.

The second Swimfit was another big success, with over 50 competitors battling it out in perfect Far North Queensland conditions.

“An ocean swim with perfect conditions is a dream for any race organizer,” said Swimfit creator Irene Cats.

“We couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful morning, the ocean was calm, the sun was out and the water temperature was a perfect 24 degrees.

“It was so rewarding to see everyone enjoying themselves and coming out of the water with a big smile on their face, even after the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Four Mile Swim, which is 6.4km.”

Proving there is a demand for long distance ocean swims in Queensland, there were nearly 20 ‘crazy kids’ on the starting line of the feature race. Cameron Keith took the lead from the start of the race and swam comfortably to the win, closely followed by Eldon O’Regan. The first female over the finish line was Anne Pleash, just under the 2hour mark.

Other races were the Hive Swimwear Two Mile Swim (3.2km) won by John Barrett and Leanne Casey. The Reef Marina One Mile Swim (1.6km) dominated by Mitchell Knight and the female win taken out by Theresa Donnelly. The Newsport Daily 500M swim was won by Callum Rothsay who will be back next to year to compete in the One Mile Swim.

“I would like to give a big thank you to all the sponsors of the Swimfit Four Mile Beach Ocean Swim and all volunteers who made the event happen,” Cats said.

The Swimfit event raised close to $500 for the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club. For full results and to stay up-to-date with Swimfit see the Facebook page and website.
