Nothing Sully about a night under the Moonlight stars
REVIEW
ONCE you leave the parking lot, you follow a sign saying Moonlight Cinema. Your walk takes you along a path through a mini forest and ends in a large open space which features Port Douglas’ only cinema on the lawns.
Welcome to QT Resort’s open-air cinema. An under-the-stars experience which is unique to this property.
QT’s Moonlight Cinema has been created on a piece of land that is available for weddings and other functions and can easily accommodate 500 patrons. And you have a choice on how you want to watch the movie – on a deckchair, a beanbag, or bring-your-own comfort.
You won’t be shown to your seat; the lights don’t dim when the movie begins; popcorn can be purchased, along with a good selection of food and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) which are based on resort prices.
Rupert Sakora, QT Resorts General Manager, told Newsport the concept has been a huge success.
“Year on year, the numbers are up and the kids’ movies have proven to be extremely well received,” he said.
“This is the only cinema in Port Douglas and saves people the trip to Cairns to see a movie. Moonlight Cinema is unique to our resort and we are proud that we can offer this to locals and tourists.”
Moonlight Cinema Port Douglas runs from 16 June to 9 October. It screens Thursday – Sunday outside of school holidays and Tuesday-Sunday during school holidays.
Besides the kids’ movies, last Sunday night’s screening of Sully – on January 15, 2009, veteran US Airways pilots Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger ditched his ill-fated airliner in the frigid waters of the Hudson River after his Airbus A320 hit a flock of Canada geese – were gripped by this Clint Eastwood-directed movie.
It was a memorable night under the stars and as the patrons mused over an unprecedented act in aviation history, many commented that this movie must surely be among the Academy Award nominations next year.
