Fine music lovers in for a treat tonight
ART
Lovers of fine music will once again be excited and entertained by the popular singer Alteouise DeVaughn in A Virtuoso Concert Angela and Alteouise at the Clink Theatre tonight at 7:30pm.
In a concert series featuring the searing tones and heartfelt performance of dramatic soprano Angela Renee Simpson, accompanied by Larry Hammond, Alteouise will present a program of songs from operas and musicals as well as African American spirituals.
In addition to directing several choirs, Alteouise contributes her time to several community groups, providing music therapy for the residents of OzCare at Port Haven, conducting the Mossman Senior’s Choir and arranging many public performances at community events, with the choirs and also as a solo artist.
Alteouise’s role as voice coach to performers has increased confidence and enhanced their performance. In 2014 Alteouise accepted the role of Musical Director for the Clink Theatre. Productions to date include the musicals ‘Annie’ and ‘Grease’.
The inaugural ‘A Night at the Opera’ opened at the Clink Theatre in September, 2015. Alteouise produced a program of light opera, with scenes from several operas: La Traviata, Nabucco and Madam Butterfly; and also included the Bizet opera, Carmen. Condensed to a one hour performance, remarkably all arias, sung in French, were included.
Critics the world over have proclaimed dramatic soprano Angela Renée Simpson’s voice wonderfully powerful, fascinating, thrilling and extraordinary. Nicola Salmoiraghi, critic for L’Opera, said of Ms. Simpson that she possessed “one of the most extraordinary voices we’ve heard from the stage of La Scala in recent times.”
Truly an international entertainer, Angela has performed in the ‘Opera Comique’ in Paris and at ‘La Scala’ in Milan. Ms Simpson’s career also covers a wide variety of roles in both opera and musicals. Equally conversant with jazz, Spirituals and Oratorio, local audiences will be treated to a virtuoso performance with examples from several genres represented.
Angela and Alteouise have recently completed extended engagements. Angela has been performing ‘Queenie’ in a national tour of “Showboat” in USA, Alteouise returned from a two month ‘Porgy and Bess’ tour in Germany. Best friends for several decades, they are looking forward to performing together again.
Accompanist Larry Hammond, a concert pianist, has family roots which extend from Cairns to Cooktown. Now resident organist at St Monica’s Cathedral, Cairns, Larry continues to teach piano and perform, regularly accompanying entrants at the Cairns Eisteddfod.
