Colour returns to famous Agincourt Reef near Port Douglas

THE famous Agincourt Reef near Port Douglas is showing signs of a full recovery from the worst coral bleaching event on record.
A new video has emerged showing the rich colours returning to bleached coral affected earlier this year.
Quicksilver marine biologist and Environment and Compliance Manager, Doug Baird, said the healthy state of the Great Barrier Reef heading into the bleaching event has ensured its recovery.
“What we are seeing is corals that are well down the process of recovery,” Baird said.
“What has allowed the corals to recover from what was the largest bleaching event in recent memory, is it was a very robust reef going into the bleaching event. It was healthy, the water quality is good out here, and in fact it’s the best managed reef system anywhere on the planet.
“This builds up resilient reef which gives it that opportunity, under these natural events to actually cope, and recover.”
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority will conduct in-water surveys in October to further access the survival rates and recovery of the reef.
