Port Douglas primed for the race that stops a nation
MELBOURNE CUP DAY
PORT Douglas will once again live up to its vibrant and festive self when the race that stops the nation becomes a focal point in the town next Tuesday, November 1.
As with previous years, many of the town’s restaurants and resorts are preparing a “feast of entertainment” for this year’s Melbourne Cup.
The Melbourne Cup, first run in 1861, is the most watched horse race in Australian racing, contested by three-year-old horses and above over a distance of 3200 metres. It is held annually at Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday in November, and has become known as “the race that stops a nation”.
This is what some of the venues are doing:
QT Port Douglas:
Regarded as the most stylish event in town, your ticket will include a glass of Mumm champagne on arrival, two hours of delicious & substantial canapés AND a two hour beverage package (12noon - 2pm). There'll be Fashions on the Deck, sweepstakes, lucky door prizes and live racing footage from Flemington. For those not ready to call it a photo finish at the end of the race, we will have DJ Bart spinning tracks from 3pm at the official wrap party.
