Council conducting investigations into illegal stormwater connections

DOUGLAS SHIRE COUNCIL

Last updated:

Douglas Shire Council will conduct investigations into illegal stormwater connections.

DOUGLAS Shire Council will be conducting investigations to locate potential illegal stormwater connections in Mossman from private and commercial properties into Council’s sewerage system from next week.

Locating and eliminating illegal stormwater connections reduces the likelihood of sewage overflows occurring during high rainfall periods.

Owners/occupiers are requested to assist with these investigations by allowing staff controlled access to sewer manholes and/or stormwater outlet points during normal working hours (between 7.30am to 4pm).

Council officers and supporting contractors will carry official identification and will require access to properties to finalise their inspections.

Please be aware that during the smoke testing of sewers, smoke may be seen escaping from vent pipes and disconnector traps on house drainage systems.

If an illegal stormwater connection exists, smoke may also escape from roof fascia guttering.

Likewise, the smoke will internally enter the building if a house drainage defect exists, e.g. via a dry floor waste or sanitary fixture. The smoke is an oil-based mist which is non-toxic and does not harm paintwork or plants.

Inspections for illegal stormwater connections for Mossman are planned to be undertaken between: 25 October 2016 – 4 November 2016.
