Academy Award winning director among film festival finalists

An Academy Award-winning director, a brother and sister with competing films and the reigning Port Shorts People’s Choice champ are among the 2016 Port Shorts Film Festival Finalist Filmmakers to be showcased under the stars in tropical Port Douglas later this month.
Hollywood director Patrick Osborne’s enriching ode to family bonds Pearl is among the 17 finalist films in the Open category of the 2016 Port Shorts Film Festival, joining emerging filmmakers from around Australia and bite-sized beauties from overseas as well as the best short films from our own backyard challenging for the Port Shorts Local Filmmaker Award.
Siblings Julian and Elizabeth Cullen have also qualified as Port Shorts Finalist Filmmakers in the Open category with their beautifully-shot short films ASHA and The Artist, while 2015 Port Shorts Film Festival People’s Choice winner Hayden Bevis returns with what promises to be another hilarious festival hit, The Touch.
Port Shorts Film Festival Director Alison George said organisers were overwhelmed by the quality of short films entered this year competing for more than $15,000 in cash and prizes and they can’t wait to share them with audiences at the Port Douglas Sports Complex on Saturday October 29.
“We feel blessed to have so many fantastic filmmakers keen to be a part of Port Shorts,” Ali said.
“It’s given us a fantastic program of short films to showcase with an entertaining mix of laughs, a few tears, beautiful filmmaking and touching stories sure to resonate with audiences.
“The Port Shorts Film Festival is a celebration of the craft of filmmaking and shines the spotlight on emerging filmmakers we’re bound to see more of on the big screen.
“Of course we’ve also got champion Aussie actor, Port Shorts Ambassador and Judge Stephen Curry MC’ing the festival and he’s excited about getting up on stage and roaming through the audience cracking a few jokes about pretty much anyone and anything he can think of.
“There will be plenty of delicious food and a full bar available and it promises to be an amazing cinematic experience under the stars.”
Discount tickets are now available for the Port Shorts Film Festival (www.portshorts.com) on Saturday October 29 and the Port Shorts Young Filmmakers Awards on Friday October 28, to be held under the stars at the Port Douglas Sports Complex.
