THE Astute Financial Muddies under 16 team found it tough going at Endeavour Park on day one of their two day match against Rovers last Saturday.

The team of ten players consisting of the ‘walking wounded’ deteriorated during the day to finish as a team of eight with the makeshift sickbay getting a fair workout. Batting first, Rovers first innings sees them at 7/134 after 40 overs with the Muddies all out at 8/52.

With Nick Rayner opening the bowling early wickets were looking likely for the Muddies however it wasn’t until the seventh over that Nick got the break-through giving Captain-Keeper Daniel Davidson the first of three catches.

Nick kept steaming in all day and was rewarded with figures of 1/25 from eight overs.

Liam Clacherty was the other opening bowler and was very economical finishing with 0/5 from four overs (three maidens) before spending time in the sickbay and being unable to continue the match.

Reuben Allison was again economical and was unlucky not to finish with a wicket taking 0/5 from six overs.

Connor White’s figures of 0/15 from four overs are not reflective of the tight lines he bowled. In a welcome return to form with the ball, Nathan Deuble picked up the next wicket in the twentieth over finishing as the pick of the bowlers with 3/25 from his seven overs.

Vincent Killeen struggled to find a good length and finished with 1/33 from five overs. Tom Harvey bowled well finishing with 0/5 from two overs and threw down the stumps from mid-on to effect a direct hit run out. Vice-Captain Ryan ‘Peg Leg’ Doble chimed in with a handy 1/17 from four overs to round out the bowling effort.

Nick Rayner opened the batting along with Ryan Stanaway.

Ryan got off the mark with leg glance reminiscent of Dean Jones before getting a leading edge and finding himself on his way back to the change rooms for 2. Playing the type of patient innings needed, Nick Rayner made his way to 19 from 45 before being trapped in front LBW.

Nathan Deuble was neither the first, nor the last to fall victim to the slow pace of the very green pitch and was caught on 3/10. Daniel Davidson and Connor White was also caught off slower balls falling for 10 and 0 respectively. After making his way to four runs Vincent Killeen copped one that held its pace and kept low, and was judged LBW.

Reuben Allison found himself on his way without scoring as did Tom Harvey. With an undermanned team resulting in three less batsmen, Ryan Doble found himself the not out batsmen on 7 from nine balls faced.

Credit goes to Tom Harvey who got out of his sick bed to support his team mates, and was off the field for a period of time still ill. Also to Liam Clacherty who battled through sickness to produce such economical bowling figures. Ryan Doble who could barely walk just 12 hours before also deserves credit as does Ryan Stanaway for playing up a grade in his second match of the day.

The match resumes next Saturday at Endeavour Park with a full strength Rovers continuing their first innings at 7/134. Muddies will be looking for some quick wickets in Rovers first and second innings in a bid to save the match but may well have their work cut out for them.
