OLYMPIC marathon runner Jess Trengove has a simple remedy for the post-Rio blues.

"I've kept myself busy," the Australian distance star said, who will compete in the 10km event at the Tropical Journey's Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival on Sunday.

"Beating the post-Olympic blues was all about keeping myself occupied. It's such a build up to the Olympics and a gruelling preparation, so I've had some other work on, school visits and talks.

"It's just so nice to be here in Port Douglas and get away from it all now."

Trengove came home in 22nd position at the Olympic Games in Brazil, beating her London placing of 39th. She flew home in the women's marathon in 2:31:44 despite having an injury-interrupted preparation to enhance her reputation as one of the country's brightest athletes.

"I was really pleased with how the entire athletics team performed," she said.

"Personally, It was great to be able to improve on my London placing as I had my challenges heading in.

"I was aiming for a top 20 finish so I fell a couple of places short of that, but when I crossed the line I was absolutely empty. I didn't have much more to give, so from that perspective you can't ask for much more from yourself."

Trengove and boyfriend Dylan Stenson, also an Australian 800m athlete, have fallen in love with Port Douglas.

It's the second year they have lined up for the Festival, and Trengove hinted next year's marathon event could be used as part of her 2018 Commonwealth Games preparation, which will be held on the Gold Coast.

"I just can't believe how idyllic it is here in Port Douglas, the scenery is amazing and it’s a unique course," Trengove said.

"I really enjoy the added challenge that the heat and humidity brings. It's quite different to other parts of Australia so it adds that extra element which I enjoy."

The Tropical Journey's Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival starts on Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas this Sunday.
