HEMINGWAY’S Brewery averted a potential disaster just weeks before its grand opening after its roof caught fire last night.

The Port Douglas Fire Brigade was called after a gas hot water unit caught alight in the building, located at the marina, prompting calls to Triple 0.

A single fire truck arrived at the scene at 8.30pm and was able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

“There was a visible fire once we arrived but we had it under control pretty quickly,” Clayton Vladich, from the Port Douglas Fire Brigade, said.

“Our biggest concern was isolating services because there is gas and power running through the building. The management and staff at the business were extremely helpful and did a great job.”

Hemingway’s Brewery general manager Dean Scadding said no damage had been caused and praised the local crew for their prompt response.

“The local guys were fantastic,” Scadding said.

The brewery is expecting to open its doors in late June.
