LIFESTYLE: Port Douglas - why it’s a mecca for destination weddings

WORDS by Bec McLean

EVERYONE remembers where they said, “I do”. On a beach, inside a chapel, among the cane fields, in the backyard, aboard a yacht, it’s a precious moment etched in the memories of everyone witnessing it.

It’s also the reason why Port Douglas is among the most popular destination wedding locations in Australia, with so many fabulous options available.

Here’s a few insights into some of my favourite places to share your special moment and how to get the most out of the experience.

St Mary’s By The Sea Chapel – You only need to take one look at St Mary’s, overlooking the Sugar Wharf and the Coral Sea all the way to the Daintree Rainforest, to understand the attraction.  Another bonus is that it is non-denominational so you can also use a celebrant.

Little Cove –
A very pretty sheltered foreshore with the Coral Sea and the Daintree Rainforest as your backdrop. Little Cove is a truly beautiful place to get married and is available in set two hour blocks for wedding ceremonies.

Sugar Wharf – You cannot go wrong with a heritage-listed waterfront building soaking up the Dickson Inlet and rainforest vista. The Sugar Wharf is, for obvious reasons, very popular as a wedding reception venue but can be just as beautiful for your ceremony. Plan for a later ceremony though as the Sugar Wharf can get very hot in the early to mid-afternoon.

Rex Smeal Park (The Point) – Strolling past a magnificent fig tree to your palmtree, ocean and rainforest-fringed ceremony feels fabulous. While the venue is in a public park (you will still require a permit) it’s an amazing location out on the point.

Beaches – There are literally dozens of spectacular beach locations to celebrate your wedding ceremony around Port Douglas. You may need to take into account tide times and wind.

Resorts & Private Homes – There is a resort or private home to suit every wedding ceremony taste within a stone’s throw of Port Douglas. Perfect for those who want to have the ceremony and reception and accommodation all in spot!
