Port Douglas parties on despite wet and wild Carnivale
Published Monday 23 May 2016
THE party in Port Douglas went on over the weekend despite wet weather playing havoc with Carnivale 2016.
More than 80mm of rain poured down over Saturday and Sunday making life difficult for organisers with a number of events cancelled or altered.
The Wonderland Spiegeltent was forced to temporarily shut down on Saturday after losing power, while the outdoor stages for the Fisherman’s Village Seafood Music Festival were cancelled.
Despite the challenges, Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu praised new organisers Knockout Events and said the festival was a triumph.
“The shortened format proved very successful from a marketing and promotional perspective, especially considering the weather," Mayor Leu said.
“Although the weather attempted to rain on Carnivale’s parade, the show still went on for the most part which was particularly evident on Saturday night with hundreds of people laughing and dancing in the torrential downpour at the Port on a Fork Music, Food and Wine event on Saturday night.

“I’d like to congratulate Carnivale 2016 organiser Melissa Head and her team from Knockout Events for putting together such an exciting program of events and bringing so many world-class performers to the Douglas Shire."
More than 500 people still braved the wet conditions on Saturday night at the Port on a Fork Food, Music and Wine Festival, while plenty turned out to the Family Beach Day.
The Paradise on a Plate Longest Lunch on Friday afternoon and the annual street parade were the least affected by the conditions and were a huge success.
Newsport photographer Tim Corin was out and about capturing all the action over the weekend, and compiled the gallery below of the street parade on Friday night.
