Women of Douglas unite for domestic violence

The first annual 'Women Supporting Women' luncheon hopes to raise support and awareness for the ongoing work of Ruth's Women's Shelter.

Founded in 1977, Ruth’s Women’s Shelter is a not for profit organisation providing secure crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic and family violence.

The shelter is one of only two providing crisis accommodation for women from Cooktown to Cardwell, and event organiser Natalie Johnson hoped the event would raise much needed 'practical items' to ensure Ruth's long term survival.

“This is where the fantastic women of Douglas can support the shelter," Johnson said.

“Rather than fundraise money, we are fundraising practical items to assist and support women. As part of the day, we ask ladies when they come along to lunch to enjoy the company of friends, they also bring one of the listed “care packages” which will be accepted by the Shelter on the day.”

Inspired by a recent cocktail event organised by locals where guests donated sanitary items to be distributed to homeless women in Cairns, Johnson was hoping the event, to be held at Salsa Bar and Grill on April 15, would continue to highlight the ongoing awareness campaign targeting Domestic and Family Violence in our community.

“The campaign to extinguish domestic and family violence is something I'm extraordinarily passionate about,” she said.

“And ensuring women understand that Domestic Violence does not necessarily just mean physical violence, but financial abuse, emotional and mental abuse, social and verbal abuse. I also want the event to provide practical advice on where to go and what to do if women need assistance.”

The day will feature a two course lunch by Salsa, a glass of sparkling wine on arrival sponsored by Red + White Wines and entertainment by talented local musician, Bobby Maguire.
