Local young golfer has PGA career on his mind

Mossman State High School student Nicolas Scomazzon has his sights set on a career as a professional golfer and he has the results to prove it.

At the youthful age of just 15, Nicks’s handicap is 3.0, and said “it’s taken years to reach this level”.

He started playing golf from the tender age of seven, after watching his brother playing the sport.

“I use to watch him play and I just wanted to do what he did at the time,” said Nick.

Currently his home courses are the Palmer Sea Reef and Mossman Golf Club and his coach is Luke Newman from Cairns.

“I use to practice when I was little and then when I got to a certain age and new I was serious, I started golf lessons,” he said.

Nick’s favourite golfer is Rickie Fowler “because he has a great swing, game and attitude”, he said.

His favourite club in the bag is the 7 Iron and his best score in competition is 67 (4 under) in last Sunday’s Palmer Sea Reef Competition.

Nick will be playing in some well-known tournaments during 2016, the All Our Regions Open Championships, Queensland Boys and Girls Championships and the North Queensland Masters in Ayr.

“I’ve played in a lot of competitions mainly in Queensland and I try to watch golf tournaments as well,” he said.

His all time group (4) would be himself, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day and Jordan Speith.

For now, Nick’s ambitions are practicing, playing and improving “while getting my Handicap down to Scratch and eventually to become a PGA Tour Player,” he said.

His main focus right now is, “to get better”.
