Lights out at QT Port Douglas for Earth Hour 2016

Saturday March 19 will see QT Port Douglas plunge into darkness for Earth Hour 2016, to show support for the ‘Places We Love’.

In 2016, Earth Hour in Australia celebrates the beautiful outdoor lifestyle we live, from reef and rainforests to mountains and lakes, but also aims to raise awareness that this lifestyle is under threat from rising temperatures and more extreme weather caused by carbon pollution. The focus of Earth Hour 2016 is switching off to protect the ‘Places We Love’.

“We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and naturally want to continue sharing our backyard with visitors from all over the world. QT Port Douglas are supporters of green practices and climate change awareness, which is why getting behind Earth Hour 2016 was so important to us,” says Sharon Timms, QT Port Douglas PR and Events Coordinator.

“By supporting Earth Hour 2016 we are making a commitment to both our local environment and tour operators, and demonstrating care for the places we love”.

Hosting the resort’s third annual “Unplugged” gig at Estilo, QT will host guests and locals alike for an intimate, candlelit gig by one of the Far North’s most popular and talented chanteuses, Katie Jay . The event begins at 7pm, with official lights out at 8:30pm (local time) for Earth Hour.

This will also be the “unofficial post-party venue” for the March 19 election day on Saturday.

QT Port Douglas will also request in-house guests turn off all in-room lighting, air-conditioning and electrical items to join the local community and staff in Estilo from 7pm, as Katie Jay kicks off a night of celebration of our natural environment.

Between 8:30pm and 9:30pm Katie Jay will go ‘unplugged’ and it will be lights out for the resort, which will limit common-area use of electricity to essential purposes only, where safe to do so.

The resort is encouraging guests to BYO candles and battery operated light sources to enjoy an evening’s entertainment, and is offering a $10 wood- fired pizza menu and $5 draft beers that showcase local Australian produce at its finest.
