Learn CPR to save a life
Published Monday 7 March 2016
Emergencies can happen any time, anywhere. Would you know what to do? A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart has stopped or is too weak to pump effectively. 76% of cardiac arrests occur at home and the most likely witness is a spouse or family member. In an emergency every second counts.
The Port Douglas Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) is encouraging Port Douglas locals to attend a CPR Awareness session hosted by LAC volunteers to help save a life.
The CPR Awareness Program is a major LAC initiative delivered in partnership with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) to teach as many Queenslanders as possible how to conduct life-saving CPR in an emergency.
CPR is an important part of the chain of survival and with most cardiac arrests occurring in the home, it is more likely than not that a family member or someone known to you will require CPR.
The program aims to teach participants how to conduct CPR on an adult, child and baby with the correct rate, rhythm and effort.
It also gives participants an opportunity to practice their learnt skills on a manikin to gain confidence.
The program will also discuss the signs and symptoms of a person experiencing a heart attack and what vital information needs to be relayed to the Emergency Medical Dispatcher when calling Triple Zero (000).
The CPR Awareness Program is free of charge. A gold coin donation is requested to assist Port Douglas Local Ambulance Committee with associated costs.
