Douglas croc ‘Babinda’ predicts election upset

JULIA Leu may be the raging hot favourite to retain her position as Mayor in the upcoming election, but a four-and-a-half metre crocodile in Port Douglas has other ideas.

The Wildlife Habitat’s cold-blooded election Nostradamus has predicted a boilover not even Leu would argue with, considering she’d have to step into Babinda’s cage to take it up with him.

“Babinda’s always been politically astute especially in his own territory, so he was keen to try and influence the locals to make the right decision at the polls,” Wildlife Supervisor Rabecca Lynch said.

The gigantic reptile was offered pictures on separate mullet-dripped sticks of the mayoral candidates Leu and Roy Weavers, and after swinging right, then left, couldn’t resist taking a chunk out of the campaigns clear underdog.

Babinda was named after the township near Cairns he was collected for being a ‘problem’ croc. He certainly had no problems sinking his teeth into this Douglas Shire election campaign.

“Roy might have been chasing his tail leading up to this election but Babinda sure liked the smell of him,” Lynch said.

When asked for specifics on why he chose Weavers the prehistoric reptile just grunted and slinked back into his lagoon.

Only time will tell if he’s made the right call.
