OPINION: Fancy an omen bet? Get behind PORT DOUGLAS in England’s richest race

TALK about an omen bet.

Those who fancy a flutter and live in our piece of paradise would be crazy not to put a cheeky 'twenny' on up-and-coming Irish stayer Port Douglas when it runs in the famous Epsom Derby this weekend.

You’ll have to pace yourself on Saturday though, with England’s equivalent of the Melbourne Cup set to jump at 1.30am on Sunday morning Australia Eastern Standard Time.

It’s still unclear why connections of the horse decided on the name, but who really cares? Port Douglas is one of the live chances in the UK's richest race having narrowly lost to stablemate and Derby favourite US Army Ranger in the Chester Vase.

The Telegraph in London described Port Douglas as “Consistent and tough. Stamina unlikely to be an issue and looks sure to run well, seems to act on any ground.”

That’s good enough for me.

And if the Aiden O’Brien trained horse with our name gets up at the juicy odds of $12, I’ll be singing ‘la, la, la, la, la, la…’ all the way to the bank like the hit America song about a horse with no name.

So come on Port Douglas, kick!
