Julie defies the odds with incredible hole-in-one at Mossman

YOU are a better chance of sustaining an injury from a toilet seat, winning an Academy Award or finding a pearl in an oyster than you are of hitting a hole-in-one in golf.

The odds of achieving golf’s Holy Grail hovers around 11,000 to 1, so imagine the reaction when Cooya Beach resident Julie Hooker’s ball trickled into the hole after her tee shot on the 13th at the Mossman Golf Club on Sunday.

“We went absolutely nuts!” Julie said.

The long-time Port Douglas local and Mossman Golf Club member has been playing golf for 14 years and has ‘never gone close’ to achieving what every golfer dreams about before setting out for a round.

She claimed to have played the worst round of her life the day before joining golf’s exclusive hole-in-one club.

Julie opted for her Callaway Hybrid 4 on the 13th tee (133m, par 3) on Sunday, and her sweetly timed drive landed on the right side of the green before gently rolling into the hole.

“We just couldn’t believe it and the entire course heard us going absolutely nuts,” Julie said, who was playing with Judy Krady, Jo Constantine and Shona Barbour at the time.

“I hit it well, and it just kept looking better and better but you never imagine it going in.

“The adrenaline was pumping for a long time after, and then I had to shout the entire bar when we got in.”

To make things even better, Julie’s husband Russell was nearest the pin on the same hole on Sunday, and also hit a hole-in-one on the 13th on St Patrick’s Day last year.

Both clearly have the luck of the Irish.
