BREAKING: Elderly man drives car over embankment near Sheraton Mirage

AN elderly man has been taken to Mossman Hospital after crashing his vehicle near the Sheraton Mirage Country Club this morning.

A 92-year-old male driver lost control of his vehicle near the roundabout of the golf club, driving the car over an embankment and onto the railway tracks.

No-one else was injured in the crash, but the man was taken to Mossman Hospital in an ambulance with badly lacerated legs.

“Preliminary enquires suggest the man has lost control of his vehicle and gone over the embankment,” Mossman Police officer in charge, Matt Smith, said at the scene.

“There is no suspicion of alcohol or any other offences being committed, it just appears it could be due to age, or a medical condition.

“We’re still trying to piece together exactly what happened and will continue with our enquires.”

Workers for Mossman and Port Douglas Tree Lopping and Sheraton Mirage staff were first to attend the scene and rendered assistance to the man before waving down police from Port Douglas Road.

"The injuries the man has sustained have probably been extenuated by his age so there is some concern because of his age,” Smith said.

RACQ have removed the vehicle from the train tracks and there are no current road closures.
