The regular basketball season is held on Wednesday nights for men and Thursday nights for ladies, at the Cyclone Shelter/Recreation Centre, located in the grounds of the Port Douglas school, near St Mary’s Church.

Last Saturday night the Douglas Heat invited Mulgrave up for a representative’s game. Scoring was slow with the Heat winning in defence by commanding the boards under the basket. This caused Mulgrave to try many three point shots but they weren’t up to their usual high standard.

Under the coaches Lukas Teasdale and Nathan Stoker, the Heat ran out winners at 48–20. The MVP was number 11, Yuri Stefani who scored 17 points.

Until the Cyclone Shelter became their home ground, the Heat struggled to compete in the Cairns North competition, having to always travel to Smithfield for games, some of which started before sundown which made it difficult for some Heat members to get there on time. Additionally, sometimes late matches didn’t finish until after 10pm which meant getting home after 11pm.

The Douglas Heat competition is now going gang-busters and the competition semi-finalists will battle it out starting 6pm tonight at the Cyclone Shelter, for the honour of playing our local heroes, in the Grand final the following Wednesday (8th June), at 6pm.

All are invited to attend both evenings and cheer for the local team.

The Douglas Heat welcomes new members for the next competition which starts 13th July for the men and 14th July for the very active women’s competition.
