SOUTH Queensland was too slick for North Queensland at Cazaly’s Stadium on Saturday night to record its first win of the representative concept.
The Northerners have won the previous two clashes but were humbled by the Southerners, who turned in a dominant display ahead of the Western Bulldogs equally impressive win over Gold Coast SUNS.
The boys in red were led superbly by Maroochydore’s Daniel Dzufer, who was awarded the Ron Davidson Medal for South Queensland best player. Cairns Saints jet Jack Philip picked up the Wayne Jackson Medal after starring for North Queensland on the night.
Port Douglas had eight players don the NQ guernsey in Kye Chapple, Peter Bury, Hayden Graham, Wes Glass, Declan Kelly, Jonathan Hobbs, Jesse Mawson and Dylan Wearmouth. All had their moments in what was tough night out for the home side.
South Queensland displayed a greater work-rate in the opening term and dominated for large parts with big Yeronga forward Glenn Boyd having four shots at goal to finish the term with 2.2. They led by 19 points at the first change and extended it to six goals at half time with a commanding second term. They booted 4.2. to 1.3 for the term to set up a match-winning 7.3 to 1.3 lead at main change.
Kenmore live wire Jake Dewinter proved a handful with four second half goals for South Queensland - three in the last term - who thoroughly deserved their 12.8 (80) to 5.11 (41).
