Mossman coffee culture on the rise

MOSSMAN and coffee culture would rarely have been used in the same sentence, but in the words of Bob Dylan ‘times they are a changing’ thanks to a thriving local café scene.

Beechwood Cafe on Front Street opened its doors five weeks ago and has been an instant hit, with owner Sharon Beechey telling Newsport the shop hasn’t stopped humming.

"We have been overwhelmed by it's popularity and we couldn't be happier," she said.

Sharon previously ran the popular Beaches Cafe in Port Douglas for 18 years before deciding to set up shop in her hometown of Mossman. She is not surprised by the spike in people visiting the town for its coffee and cafe's.

“Mossman is such a beautiful town with beautiful surroundings," Beechey explains.

"It's a busy little place and is a major highway for people getting up to Cape Tribulation and the like, and we have some nice options for a stop."

An old Mossman favourite, Temptations Cafe, is also drawing in locals and tourists in large numbers after undergoing an extensive refurbishment last month.

The cafe, run by popular local businessman Peter McKeown, has had a major facelift and its new dining area would not be out of place on Melbourne’s Brunswick Street. And if coffee isn’t your thing, then Temptations is now offering a fully stocked bar with cocktail specials on Friday evenings from 5pm.

“We think it looks great and the customers certainly seem to be enjoying the new feel,” he said.

Mossman staples Goodies Café and The Junction are also reporting an influx of visitors choosing to use the town as a coffee break to-and-from their exploration further north.
