Mossman celebrates NAIDOC with street march and family fun day

INDIGENOUS and non-indigenous Australians joined together to celebrate NAIDOC week today in Mossman with a street march and family fun day.

The Mossman Community Street March turned Front Street into a sea of colour and activity as hundreds walked to Babu Kinkari Park.

The NAIDOC Family Fun day at the park, which will run until 2.30pm today, has been turned into a cultural kaleidoscope of traditional dance, music, food and activities.

“The Mossman NAIDOC Committee has done a wonderful job to put together such as great program that encourages individuals, families, schools, community groups and local businesses to get involved,” Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said.

“I hope everyone is able to participate…to learn about our local cultures, have fun and celebrate the achievements of our community.”

NAIDOC, which stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, was created to increase awareness in the community of the treatment and status of indigenous Australians.

Its origins can be traced back to 1920’s when pockets of Aboriginal groups began to speak up about their past and rich cultural history.
