PORT Douglas moved a game clear on top of the AFL Cairns table following a 53-point win over Cairns City Lions on Saturday.

The Crocs are outright leaders courtesy of another strong performance and an upset win by Centrals Trinity Beach over the second placed South Cairns Cutters. The Cutters had previously lost only one game for the season to Port Douglas.

Port Douglas will now have two weeks to freshen up before the run to the finals begins.

The Lions put up a fight in the first half holding the Crocs to just 5.7 at the main break a manageable 23-point advantage, a rarity this season.

Cairns City full back Thomas Keygan was managing to achieve what most have not this season by keeping Crocs captain Kye Chapple at bay, restricting him to two goals at the main break. He stuck to his task for the majority of the match to be named his sides best player, but two late final term goals still saw the competition’s leading goal-kicker finish with five majors.

Port Douglas had winners through Declan Kelly, Jonathon Hobbs, Sam Scally, Mitch Bohm, Hayden Graham and Brett McKeown and would have been happy to notch up the 12.10 (82) to 4.5 (29) victory.
