AFL CAIRNS: Crocs expecting fired-up Cutters in Cairns

Published Friday 21 July 2016

PORT Douglas will look to keep its foot on the throat of the AFL Cairns competition tomorrow when it meets South Cairns Cutters.

Crocs defender Wes Glass said they were expecting a fired-up opponent in the top-of-the-table clash at Fretwell Park after they smashed them by 70-points in round nine. The Crocs have not lost a game since going down to the Cutters in round two, and extended their winning streak to 10 with a powerful win over Cairns City Lions before the bye.

Glass has been a rock in defence throughout the unbeaten run and will head into the fixture as one of eight Crocs who represented North Queensland on Saturday night against South Queensland.

“We’ll probably have to play them at some stage in the finals so we’re going down there to play well, and to win,” Glass said.

“They’re a good side so we’ll need to be on, and they’ll be keen to do well on their home deck. I think it’s a positive we had so many of our guys playing in the rep game and we’ll look to carry our form into this week.”

Glass was joined by captain Kye Chapple, Peter Bury, Declan Kelly, Jesse Mawson, Hayden Graham, Dylan Wearmouth and Jonathan Hobbs in the Northerners loss to South Queensland in the AFL curtain raiser at Cazalys Stadium.

Glass joined Port Douglas last season from South Australian club Willunga and has been a key factor in their success. The 33-year-old said the current squad had improved and was motivated to achieve the ultimate reward after last year’s disappointing preliminary final loss to Cairns Saints.

““It’s a great club and we’ve got a really tight knit group this year,” he said.

“Everyone seems to get along with each other and I think we’ve improved because of it.

“Clearly we want to be playing good footy at the end of the season and improve on last year’s finals series, but we’ve just got to take care of things along the way.”

A win will see the Crocs move two games clear of South Cairns on top of the table.
