Port Douglas to get a taste of Great Australian Bites festivities

There are even more reasons to celebrate Australia Day in the Douglas Shire with Port Douglas chosen as one of only three locations throughout Queensland to feature a free Great Australian Bites concert.

The Great Australian Bites is an initiative of the State Government showcasing local musicians and regional cuisine to celebrate Australia Day. The Port Douglas event is presented by Douglas Shire Council in partnership with the Queensland Government and National Australia Day Council.

Port Douglas and Airlie Beach were chosen as the first regional venues to feature Great Australian Bites festivities, which have proved hugely popular in Brisbane in recent years.

The Port Douglas Great Australian Bites is a free event and will be held at Rex Smeal Park from 11am-3.30pm on Australia Day, immediately following the Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony to be held at the Port Douglas Community Hall from 9.30am on 26 January.

Mayor Julia Leu encouraged everyone to come along and get a taste of the Port Douglas Great Australian Bites festivities.

“It promises to deliver a great atmosphere with a number of excellent local bands and musicians performing on stage as well as pop-up food stalls showcasing our fantastic local cuisine,” Mayor Leu said.

“Locations don’t get any better than Rex Smeal Park to appreciate the tastes and sounds of summer with breathtaking views of the Coral Sea and the Daintree Rainforest as the backdrop.

“Bring the family, bring your camp chair or picnic rug and make the most of the relaxing atmosphere, enjoying Far North Queensland produce cooked by local chefs while listening to home-grown talent.

“There will also be a host of family-friendly community activities to keep guests entertained on the day including a jumping castle for the kids, pie eating competition, tug-o-war championship, thong-throwing and pavlova judging.

“On behalf of the Douglas Shire, I’d like to thank the State Government for choosing Port Douglas as one of the select locations for this fabulous free community event.”
