Christmas celebrations were marred for one couple who were assaulted on Christmas Day at approximately 11:20pm on Davidson Street. Port Douglas police are investigating the incident.

Police advise a male and female were walking from Macrosson Street to Davidson Street when they were assaulted by two offenders.

It was reported that the couple were taken to Mossman Hospital with head injuries and released later the that evening.

Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that may assist them in their investigations.

Port Douglas Police Sergeant Damien Meadows said overall the festive season ended on a positive note.

Due to the road safety campaign that began at the beginning of the school holidays, there was a heightened level of police presence and the vast majority of public adhered to the warnings.

“There were limited numbers of drink drivers detected as well as a limited number of speeding offences,” said Sergeant Meadows.

Given the huge crowd presence during the New Year's Eve celebrations in Port Douglas, Sergeant Meadows said everyone was very well behaved.

“There were five arrests in total, one drink driving and four minor street offences.  There were no assaults,” he said.

Phase Three of the road safety campaign, which incorporates January school holidays and the back-to-school period continues until January 29.

Sergeant Meadows is appealing to the public to be mindful of children on the roads especially those practicing their bicycle routes to school who may not be experienced riders.
