How will you celebrate Australia Day?

The meaning of Australia Day and how it is celebrated can vary amongst all Australians.

The Australia Day Council states that, at its core, Australia Day is a day driven by communities and the celebrations held in each town, suburb or city, unified by the celebration of what’s great about Australia and being Australian.

On Australia Day, over half of the nations population of 21 million attend either an organised community event, or get together with family and friends with the intention of celebrating our national day.

Tourism Port Douglas Daintree (TPDD) executive officer Tara Bennett said our friendly atmosphere would be the highlight of Australia Day.

“With most schools shut on Monday we anticipate plenty of locals will head our way for an extra-long weekend enjoying the Port Douglas and Daintree region,” said Ms Bennett.

“Local food, Aussie fun and some great music will be part of the Great Australian Bites experience at Rex Smeal Park,” she said.

QT Port Douglas PR and Events Co-Ordinator Sharon Timms said bikinis, board shorts and a bar is all that is needed this Australia Day.

“QT Port Douglas will host their annual ‘Great Australian BBQ’ on the Estilo Lawn and deck, and toast this sunburnt country of ours,” she said.

Port Douglas Yacht Club will celebrate with a waterfront Australia Day Party with a celebration of music featuring the Triple J Hottest 100 with DJ Joe Brown adding funky tunes to the mix.

Palmer Sea Reef will celebrate Australia Day hosting a ‘Golfing Super Special’ with a traditional Aussie BBQ, Australia Day Games and themed cocktails and beer specials all day.

Cow Bay Hotel will feature the annual Daintree Ride-on Mower Grand Prix, toad races and live music finishing with a camp oven dinner.

Australia Day is also a time of pride and excitement for new citizens who call themselves Australian for the first time on 26 January after being conferred citizenship.

Mayor Cr Julia Leu on behalf Douglas Shire Council will host the Citizenship Ceremony Civic Recognition and Australia Day Awards at the Port Douglas Community Hall commencing at 9:30am.

However you celebrate your Australia Day, many more spend the public holiday relaxing with family and friends. It is also a day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation.
