Business Development Fund to give boost to innovators

At the close of the 2015 Douglas Business Forum on November 12, it was announced by Mayor Leu that Council would establish a Business Development Fund, which was officially launched on 1 December 2015.

In a media statement announcing the launch of the fund, Mayor Leu said the object of the Business Development Fund was to provide opportunities to the business and not-for-profit sector to support the growth of local business and industry in the Shire.

With the recognition of innovative growth in the Douglas Shire, Mayor Leu stated that Council wants to encourage the development of local businesses and organisations to help them reach new audiences.

Recognising that there is a lot to be positive about for businesses in the Douglas Shire should be acknowledge stated Mayor Leu, as well as having an understanding of what is working, so that collaboration on what can be improved on, will deliver a positive outcome.

“The launch of this new grant program now provides a funding opportunity for those that have a good idea and are enthusiastic about building on their business concept.

“This may include assisting with the establishment, development, growth and diversification of individual businesses, industries and specific business sectors within the region.

“The fund could also assist to enhance the skills and professional development of micro, small and medium-sizes owners and employees to develop their businesses and prosper within the region.

“There is also an opportunity to create economic development and investment opportunities which support social enterprises and employment opportunities for long-term unemployed as well as engage and provide opportunities for vulnerable and marginalised groups,” said Mayor Leu.

Local not-for-profit organisations, businesses and companies are invited to review the guidelines for eligibility and apply for funding under the 2015-2016 Business Development Fund for projects commencing in the 2016-2017 financial year.

Applicants must be based in the Douglas Shire Council area and funded projects must commence only after Council approval has been given. Applicants must discuss their application with a Council Officer prior to lodgement. The Business Development Fund will contribute up to 50% (or up to a maximum of $10 000) towards a successful project or initiative.
