It’s the television show everyone loves to talk about and in June, Port Douglas will get close up and personal with the American media franchise The Real Housewives.

Matchbox Pictures, the Line Producers, have confirmed they will spend five days shooting the first season of Real Housewives of Auckland, in what is a major coup for Port Douglas.

“This is extremely exciting for the town and will not only impact our economy, but provide world-wide exposure for our region. A total of 30 crew and seven housewives will be in town for the shoot,” said Helen De Ross, president of the Douglas Chamber of Commerce.

“Matchbox Pictures have said they are keen to promote areas of our choice which will assist us from a tourism perspective.

“It’s also been suggested that the housewives be placed outside of their comfort zone at the chosen shooting locations, and it was well received when I recommended Jungle Surfing.

“I have also put forward the following for consideration:

  • Reef Trip with Enterprise Charters.
  • Daintree Tour/Mossman Gorge 50% and 50% Jungle Surfing (same day).
  • Tony’s Tropical Tours.
  • Barbados cocktails; Aquarius Sunset Sail; Hemingway’s Brewery for dinner.
  • Restaurant Options: Salsa, Nautilus, Harrisons or Bucci, Hi-Tide (breakfast or lunch to see the beach) and Silky Oaks.
  • Day Spa: Niramaya.
  • GBR flights from airport.

“I have ensured that Chamber members, or those about to join, be considered,” she said.

The Real Housewives is an American media franchise that consists of several reality television series. The shows document the lives of several affluent housewives residing in varying regions throughout the United States.

The first version, The Real Housewives of Orange County, premiered on March 21, 2006; its success resulted in spin-off series located in New York City and Atlanta in 2008; New Jersey in 2009; Washington, D.C. and Beverly Hills in 2010; Miami in 2011; Potomac and Dallas in 2016. The subsequent instalments have proven similarly successful, and have resulted in numerous spin-off series of their own.

International versions are also broadcast by several television channels worldwide, including The Real Housewives of Athens that premiered in 2011; The Real Housewives of Vancouver in 2012; The Real Housewives of Melbourne in 2014; and The Real Housewives of Cheshire in 2015, among others.
