Electric bikes will soon be whizzing around Cape Tribulation while a multi-million dollar adventure park could be built in Craiglie after council supported the two tourism projects at its Ordinary Meeting yesterday.

Council approved the Opens external link in new windowdevelopment permit for a Cape Tribulation business to conduct electric bike tours on a loop course through the Daintree Rainforest.

The tours will use electrically-assisted mountain bikes to traverse existing rainforest tracks and provide an environmentally-friendly way to showcase the ancient wonders of the Daintree.

Closer to Port Douglas, the proposed Opens external link in new windowMowbray Adventure Park off Andreasson Rd at Craiglie promises to “get people moving, living and eating in a healthy but fun, sustainable and interesting manner”, while also providing education through a mix of “fun activities, entertainment, and healthy lifestyle and nutrition information”.

Located close to the mouth of the Mowbray River, the development will offer half, full and multi-day attendance with a fixed entry fee that includes access, meals and drinks.

Proposed precincts include a bike track and skating area, multi-use sports courts, an obstacle course, sustainable agriculture and modern agronomy education, bush kitchen and entertainment, bush craft and creative nature play space, a billabong day camp and creek access for educational purposes.

The project would also include dormitory-style accommodation to facilitate school groups and incorporate initiatives around renewable energy, environmental protection and restoration of degraded areas on the site.

Council gave the Opens external link in new windowproject in-principle support at its meeting yesterday.

The council report stated: “Although there are concerns that the land is constrained, the proponent has advised that these constraints can be managed. In a general sense, the proposal has the potential to add to the tourism experience in Douglas Shire by offering an activity that is not presently available in the market.”
