Riders pumped for new bike track in Port Douglas

THE regions bike and skateboard enthusiasts are anticipating the Douglas Shire Council’s bid to secure funding for an asphalt pump track.
Council will apply for a $100,000 grant under the Queensland Government’s ‘Get Playing Places and Spaces’ funding program for the construction of the track, which would be built at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex. Mayor Julia Leu said council would contribute the remaining $25,000 needed for its construction.
“Council supports and encourages a healthy and active region through the provision of sporting, cultural and recreational opportunities however there is a gap for children, especially in Port Douglas, not involved in organised sport,” Leu said.
“Bike riding is an extremely popular recreational activity for young people and the Douglas Shire has some amazing mountain bike tracks but most of these are very challenging and not suitable for young riders or beginners whereas the pump track caters for all skill levels and it’s free to use.
“The location for the proposed pump track also builds on an active community precinct, helping to create a space where families, children and young people can gather for a variety of sports.”
The pump track – a loop track with mounds designed for the bike to maintain speed without pedalling – would complement the Douglas Integrated Riders and Trail-builders Club’s (DIRT) family skills park, which is also under construction.
“It’s a great concept and one we hope to deliver for our communities with the support of the State Government,” Leu said.
