A 27-year-old Port Douglas man has been charged following investigations into an assault incident.

It is alleged the man was at a Macrossan Street licensed premises in the early hours of July 24 when he indecently assaulted a 19-year-old woman, who was with a different group at the venue.

The woman verbally challenged the man before alerting a passing police patrol and reporting the incident. The alleged offender and the victim were not known to each other.

Police interviewed the man yesterday and he was charged with one count of indecent assault.

He will appear in the Mossman Magistrates Court on September 7.
