OPINION: Have our youth become jaded with the news?

Published Friday 5 August 2016

REGARDING news, everyone has a different opinion. Some choose to bury their head in the sand, others are up to date by the minute and others hear vaguely of news stories from distant conversations. I choose to be as up to date with world news as I can, not to a point where I crave the news of every second of every day of course.

To me, the news gives me a sense of the world; what it is and what it is becoming. Though it can be depressing, it can’t be erased or undone just because one doesn’t read it. And now and then, there is of course, a light news story. Please let me know if you find one.

People that I know from school could not care less about the news, instead focused on their ‘Pokémon Go’ and the ‘Instagram’. Of course it is normal for most teenagers to not care for the news however.

In the time of Donald Trump and ISIS, the news for many has become unbearable. Unless it directly affects them, they couldn’t care less. To some, the news may be pointless. Because really, what do we gain from the news? A sense of belonging or perspective? The simple satisfaction of a good news story?

I don’t know how to explain my interest in the news. I know it is mostly depressing, yet I find myself constantly checking it. Maybe it is in the hopes that I’ll read of a once in a lifetime event, such as the Brexit or the election of the first female US president (fingers crossed).

Nearly all of the people I know don’t care about the news, they try to avoid hearing about how evil the world has become. I can of course see what they mean. However, I believe it is better to know than to not.
