AFL CAIRNS: Chapple the toast of town after another ton

PORT Douglas captain Kye Chapple was the toast of town on Saturday night after the star forward reached the 100-goal milestone for a second straight season.

It took until the third term for Chapple to register another AFL Cairns ton and the floodgates opened following the celebrations for both the team and himself. After a dour first half the Crocs pulled clear to record an emphatic 61-point win over the third placed Centrals Trinity Beach, with the former Horsham spearhead finishing with a six-goal bag.

After being held to one-major for the first half leaving him stranded on 99, Chapple released the pressure when he goaled three minutes into the third term to send his teammates into raptures.

The popular 24-year-old said it was a relief to put it behind him leading into the finals.

"The last couple of weeks there has been a bit of media about it so it was good to get it out of the way," Chapple said after the match.

"The wind was swaying a bit so it was a bit tricky. Most of the midfielders have already been into me that it’s my shout tonight so I’ll' have to buy them a few."

Chapple turned the match on its head with four goals in the third term to help the Crocs extend an eight-point half time lead to 27 at the last change.

Jack Riley, Jesse Mawson and Pete Bury gradually got on top of a talented Bulldogs midfield, while Todd Shapter and Jonathan Hobbs continued their great form.

"Our second halves have been what’s getting us over the line," Chapple said.

"The last few weeks teams have been with us at half time and we've managed to kick away at the end."

Port Douglas coach Brad Cooper gave credit to the tenacity the Bulldogs showed in the first half which forced his team into uncharacteristic mistakes.

“You can't take anything away from the opposition their pressure was really good," Cooper said.

"They came to play today and they put us under pressure which meant we turned the ball over far too much for our liking."

The Crocs coach admitted his team had been 'tweaking a few things' in recent weeks in preparation for the finals and was pleased with how his team had responded.

"We have plan B and C in place if things aren't working," he said.

"The guys have been responding when they haven't been able to kick away from sides and we've been in an arm wrestle. We've changed a few things at half time the last two weeks and we've seen it work, so if we need to make those changes we will."
