PORT Douglas is fast becoming the port of choice for the most expensive superyachts in Australia.
The multi-million dollar Glaze glided into the Reef Marina on Monday night with the 160ft vessel believed the largest to ever berth in Port Douglas.
It joins the eye-catching Beluga and tourism tycoon Chris Morris’s Flying Fish as the newest additions in a massive coup for the town, which is already home to an impressive fleet of luxury vessels.
Reef Marina General Manager Rob Cruz said the vibrancy of Port Douglas was playing a leading role in trumping Airlie Beach and Cairns as a preferred destination for chartered yachts.
“It’s the natural beauty of the town and the region that’s bringing them here,” Cruz said.
“Port Douglas has a lot to offer as a land base for these vessels in terms of retail offerings. It’s attracting them to visit and to visit more often.
“The most spectacular parts of the Great Barrier Reef are north of us as well, so being the most northern port certainly helps.”
The 50m Glaze boasts a lavish sun deck and jacuzzi, a wet bar and grill and a dining area fit for royalty. It also has a sky lounge featuring surround sound theatre, media room and a stunning spiral staircase connecting all levels of the vessel.
The 34.7m Mediterranean inspired Beluga will give visitors to Port Douglas an opportunity to explore the Great Barrier Reef in a charter worthy of Hollywood’s rich and famous.
She will act as the mother ship for first-class game fishing yachts Zulu and Levante, already in Port Douglas, providing the region with a broad range of private charter options. It can accommodate up to 12 guests in five suites and can carry up to six crew members on board.
Beluga will offer expeditions and private trips from Port Douglas to as far as the Kimberley's in Western Australia, and will be a key player during the popular black marlin season later this year.
Tourism entrepreneur Chris Morris has also moved his 33.5m yacht Flying Fish to Port Douglas. He was keen to permanently move the vessel from Townsville to Port Douglas to coincide with an expected flood of tourists to the region this season.
Cruz said he was continually taking calls from superyacht agents interested in making the Reef Marina their new home.
