Port Douglas a target for new breast cancer retreat

A CHARITY which provides retreat accommodation at no cost to people living with breast cancer is calling on the Port Douglas community to help it establish its newest Queensland breast cancer retreat.

The OTIS Foundation’s General Manager Rachel Mason and Marketing and Communications Manager Carlie Ryan will visit Port Douglas next week to coincide with the annual Cancer Nurses Society of Australia Congress in Cairns, where the Foundation will exhibit.

“OTIS retreats provide women with time and space - a place to relax and reconnect with loved ones and take a break from the huge emotional challenges of living with breast cancer,” Mason said.

“We currently have 31 properties across the country, however, only two of these are located in Queensland, including one here in Port Douglas. Even with this property locally, we still need more properties to help us meet the increasing demands. It is very much our focus to help as many women as possible.”

The majority of The OTIS Foundation’s network of retreats are donated by individuals who provide access to their holiday homes for selected periods throughout the year.

The charity will manage guest bookings during the times specified as available and cover the costs associated with cleaning and linen.

“During our time here, we are also meeting with a range of supporters to discuss fundraising opportunities and seek financial donations,” Mason said.

“While the properties we offer may be donated, it is incredibly important that we raise the funds required to operate the retreats to ensure we can continue to provide as many nights as possible.” Mrs Mason added.
