OPINION: Pathology bulk billing cuts affect us all

OPINION: Douglas Shire residents need to be acutely aware that from July 1 this year, the government is eliminating the fee to bulk bill your blood tests.

The bulk billing cuts will affect millions of Australians who will be impacted in a number of ways: paying for the tests; travelling further with a longer waiting time; and increased waiting time for results.

The tests are crucial for doctors to identify an ailment and how it’s best treated. And it’s the elderly, the seriously ill, pregnant women, mothers with young children, diabetics, those with a heart condition, among others, who rely on pathology.

In cities and towns across the country, a Don’t Kill Bulk Bill campaign has been launched and flyers can be found at pathology outlets, doctors’ surgeries.

The flyer includes a petition and is addressed to “The Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled” and calls for keeping the bulk billing incentive for pathology.

This is significant for each and every family or individual in this country. This cannot be ignored. A healthy society is something every country strives for. If this is legislated, many will simply ignore having the test, especially those who cannot meet the cost. That would be a travesty and an additional burden to our health society. We cannot let it happen. Before it’s too late, take a stand and sign the petition.
