Local art on display for Carnivale

PORT Douglas Carnivale will feature Tropical Queensland’s first Container Art Park series next month.

A series of industrial containers turned into a live visual arts exhibition space will be open over the Carnivale long weekend (May 20-22), with some works on display available for sale, including pieces from local artists and organisations.

The Diane Cilento Foundation will debut a number of works from the late Hollywood movie star and local who founded the Karnak Playhouse amphitheatre over 30 years ago. The exhibit will present Diane’s life work and passion in her memory.

Terry Johnson, who painted the 2016 Port Douglas Carnivale poster, will also feature prominently. Terry works from his studios in Port Douglas and South Australia and creates colourful acrylic or mixed media works on canvas or paper inspired heavily by the natural environment.

The Port Douglas Artists Inc will also feature and will raise funds for the new Mossman Botanic Garden through the raffling of collaborative paintings made its artist members. Artists with individual work on display will include Tania Heben, Mary Ann Runciman, Joy Shand Culley, Anna Curtis, Jeff Whitehill, Jill Booth, Belinda Williams, Marie Simberg Hoglund, Ola Hogland and Gail Shaw.

Not-for-profit arts organisation Douglas Arts Base (DAB) will also be on display.

The art park will also feature stalls of handmade goods, art and jewellery from local artists available for purchase.

The event includes a main stage featuring live acts such as singer and harpist Visnja. There will also be a live painting exhibition and a children’s art activity station where kids can make their own Carnivale mask or artwork.
