Documenting the region's heroes of the Great War
Published Monday 4 April 2016
A Queensland ANZAC Centenary grant is opening the way to acknowledge and honour the significant contribution made by the men and women of the Cairns region in World War I.
The Cairns Regional Council is seeking to document this involvement and families in the Far North, including the Douglas Shire, whose relatives may have been involved in the Great War, are urged to assist in any way possible.
The Council is developing a Cairns Region ANZAC Trail of heritage sites, and is calling for public assistance to help in gathering material to contribute to the project.
The project will result in an informative map and trail guide, as well as a permanent record of known sites, ranging from war memorials and halls to honour boards and commemorative trees.
Anyone with information or memorabilia they would like to contribute is asked to contact the Cairns Historical Society on 61 7 4051 5582 or email images@cairnsmuseum.org.au
