A 56-year–old man and his 24-year-old son were spearfishing near Arlington Reef on Friday morning when the vessel broke anchor and drifted away leaving the men in the water.

The older man suffered a medical incident and was later pronounced deceased whilst the 24-year-old was rescued by a passing vessel.

The six metre aluminium hulled craft was located on a reef at the island which is adjacent to the mouth of the Daintree River, about 20 kilometres north of Port Douglas.  Arrangements are being made for the boat to be recovered.
